While most cosmetic surgery patients widely acknowledge Botox’s effectiveness at reducing the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, many are oblivious to the preventative uses of injectable neuromodulators. Yet the number of “20 somethings” receiving Botox or Dysport for preventative treatment is steadily increasing. In fact, according to a 2010 report released by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery(ASAPS), 15.2 percent of individuals between the ages of 19 and 34 received this non-surgical alternative.
Neuromodulators like Botox and Dysport are a class of injectables that work by temporarily reducing the muscle activity responsible for the appearance of unsightly crow’s feet, forehead wrinkles and “11″ lines. Basically, “preventative Botox” is based on creating a certain degree of muscle atrophy before the fine lines and wrinkles evolve into a more permanent condition. The fear of many preventative patients is, essentially, that waiting until the lines have been etched into the skin, will result in a more costly and extensive treatment plan.
Although the majority of our Botox patients are over 35 years of age, we have treated some preventative patients in their 20s who report satisfaction. It is important to note, however, that this treatment is only temporary-lasting anywhere from 3 to 4 months. For optimal results, patients must routinely maintain their treatment.
If you are troubled by the early signs of fine line or wrinkle formation, neuromodulators may be a perfectly viable option. For the rest of you “20 somethings”, preventative, anti-aging measures can include habits as simple as consuming more nutritious food sources, getting a good night’s rest, refraining from tobacco use and limiting UV exposure in addition to wearing sunscreen. While it is wise to take preventative measures while you can, don’t let the fear of aging overwhelm your life…enjoy your youth!
